When vacuum cleaners were just appearing in our country, many treated them only as "toys" for the bourgeoisie, preferring the old proletarian way of dealing with dust in the form of a dustpan and a broom. Fortunately, those days have passed and even the oldest generation has already managed to make sure that vacuum cleaners are useful. In addition, a modern vacuum cleaner has long been not that howling monster, the bag of which let through, as it were, not half of all the dust collected by this mechanism. On the contrary, modern vacuum cleaners not only use a container of water as a dust collector, but can also be made in the form factor of robots that will clean up your house on their own.
How to choose a vacuum cleaner?
The first question that a potential buyer should answer is something like this: what functions should a vacuum cleaner perform? The answer "vacuuming" does not count - all vacuum cleaners do it differently, and here it is important to decide on the range of tasks facing your future vacuum cleaner.
If the main work of the device will be to remove dust from linoleum, furniture and carpet paths, then the most appropriate purchase for you will be a simple vacuum cleaner that works only in dry cleaning mode and has a power of about 300 watts. If the house contains animals with long hair or the carpets themselves have a significant area, then it is better to purchase a more powerful device - up to 500 W, since more powerful equipment, as a rule, has a longer resource, and copes with pollution better.
Dry cleaning is by no means the only function of a vacuum cleaner. About thirty years ago, "washing" models appeared - i.e. vacuum cleaners, with which you can carry out wet cleaning of premises. Such vacuum cleaners are significantly more expensive than conventional ones, however, they bring much more benefits, since they can clean not only carpets and linoleum, but many other surfaces too. It is easier, perhaps, to clarify that washing vacuum cleaners cannot clean - this is parquet, foam-based carpets and expensive furniture that collapses when dripping liquid moisture enters.
The most modern type of vacuum cleaners are robotic. Such vacuum cleaners, according to manufacturers, are themselves able to determine the contamination of the floor, clean it and return to recharge. In practice, it turns out a little wrong: robotic vacuum cleaners are “stupid”, and therefore the quality of their work leaves much to be desired - for example, none of them can yet clean the corners of a room.
Having decided on the functionality and power of the vacuum cleaner, you should deal with such an important point as the type of tank in which dust accumulates.
To date, there are three such types: water filter, container and bag.
Vacuum cleaners with a water filter are the most convenient. The essence of their work is that the sucked-in air is passed through a layer of water and all the dust remains inside the tank. This is an almost ideal type of filter, however, such vacuum cleaners, as a rule, are somewhat more expensive: in addition, in some models, the process of cleaning the filter is quite difficult.
Container vacuum cleaners collect dust in a plastic or metal container. Under air pressure, the dust is compressed into a dense lump, which is then simply thrown away. There are two disadvantages of container vacuum cleaners - large sizes and a fair amount of noise associated with the vibration of plastic.
Vacuum cleaners equipped with disposable or reusable bags are the most common. Such devices can be very compact: in addition, the cost of a vacuum cleaner with bags is also relatively low. The only possible problem in this case is that disposable bags run out sooner or later, and it is not always possible to buy new ones. This complexity should be foreseen in advance - just ask the seller if spare bags or their reusable counterpart are available for sale.
An important detail in the vacuum cleaner is the cord, or rather its length. Purchasing a vacuum cleaner with a cord less than six meters long is fraught with constant difficulties in using it, and three or four meter cords generally automatically require an extension cord. In addition, you should pay attention to the quality of the insulation of the cord, since the cords of vacuum cleaners, in general, are subject to mechanical damage.
One of the most difficult questions that a buyer will have to answer is the question of the size of the vacuum cleaner. Naturally, everyone strives to acquire the most compact device possible, but at the same time, one should be aware that no one can make a compact, powerful and reliable electric motor at the same time - therefore, something always has to be sacrificed.
